Click here to go to Avastor's helpful information on drives This covers some things you may not know about concerning FireWire drives, especially power supplies. For instance, many drives are vastly underpowered. It's something many of the manufacturers don't want you to know about but it's very important. In fact one drive, for example, that's being sold as a "professional" external Firewire drive has a tiny 14 watt power supply, yet the internal drive itself requires 13 watts just to spin from the manufacturer's data sheets! That leaves one whole watt to work the armatures and power up all the other electronics which isn't going to happen very well. Professional? Hardly. For storing mp3 files at home? Maybe. By contrast Avastor's power supply is a beefy 40 watts. "Avastor saved my butt. My computer crashed taking the memory out. Everything was on my internal drive. US Recording shipped me an HDX800 enclosure overnight air, I pulled the internal drive from the crashed computer, popped it into the Avastor enclosure, and I was able to grab my files via the USB onto my old spare computer. Thank you!" -PH, Los Angeles. |
